The Best Work From Home Remote Jobs for Military Spouses

work from home military spouse

Military life challenges create career obstacles for many military spouses. Traditional career paths requiring the employee to work from a specific location make it hard to maintain a job with the frequent military moves to a new duty station. Pursuing a career where you can work from home may be ideal for you as a military spouse!

In actuality many active duty military spouses are unemployed, or underemployed, due to the circumstances that come with frequent moves, deployments and other aspects of military life.

A recent Department of Defense survey shows that unemployment is a problem for nearly a quarter of military spouses. This number is more than six times the national average of four percent in 2017 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The need for a job that can move with you so you don’t have to start over each time you PCS is essential.

Do work-from-home jobs exist?

As a military spouse, you have probably spent some time on Google searching jobs available for transfer or even careers jobs under a “remote” classification.

If you have ever posted in a military spouse Facebook group asking for potential jobs that allow you to work-from-home, you likely have been bombarded with multi-level marketing (MLM) companies. While these opportunities may be a great fit for some military families, the vast majority will likely not see the monetary outcomes of the top sellers because the market is oversaturated in the military spouse community.

So yes, careers with remote roles do exist and you can find one without having to sell anything to your personal network! Before we get to the jobs, we should probably make sure we understand the type of work you will be doing.

What types of jobs are you doing when you work from home?

The availability of remote opportunities has significantly increased in various industries, allowing individuals to work from the comfort of their homes or other remote locations. From small businesses to major corporations utilize remote workers. Even the federal government has online jobs. Some common types of remote job opportunities include:

  • Software Development, Web Design and IT: Remote software developers, programmers, and IT specialists often collaborate online to create and maintain software, websites, and systems.
  • Customer Service Representatives: Many companies hire customer service representatives to work remotely, handling customer inquiries and providing support through phone calls, email, or chat.
  • Content Creation and Writing: Freelance writers, bloggers, editors, and content creators often work remotely, producing articles, blog posts, marketing materials, and other written content.
  • Graphic Designer: Remote graphic designers and multimedia professionals create visual content for websites, marketing materials, and other digital platforms.
  • Marketing and Social Media Management: Digital marketing professionals, social media managers, and SEO specialists often work remotely to develop and implement online marketing strategies.
  • Project Manager: Remote project managers coordinate and oversee various aspects of projects, ensuring that they are completed on time and within budget.
  • Data Entry and Virtual Assistant: Administrative tasks, including data entry and virtual assistance, can often be performed remotely.
  • Sales Representatives: Some sales roles, such as inside sales or account management, can be conducted remotely, with sales professionals connecting with clients online or over the phone.
  • Education and Online Tutoring: Remote positions in education include online teaching, tutoring, instructional design, and e-learning development.
  • Healthcare Telecommuting: Certain healthcare roles, such as telehealth professionals, medical coders, health information specialists, and scribes can be performed remotely.
  • Human Resources: Remote HR professionals may handle recruitment, onboarding, and employee relations, often leveraging digital tools for communication and collaboration.
  • Finance and Accounting: Remote positions in finance and accounting include roles such as remote bookkeepers, accountants, and financial analysts.
  • Translation and Interpretation: Remote translators and interpreters work with written or spoken language remotely, providing services across different industries.
  • Consulting: Consultants in various fields, such as business, technology, or management, often work remotely to provide expert advice to clients.

The availability of remote positions can vary by industry and company, but advancements in technology and changes in work culture have led to increased opportunities for individuals to work remotely across diverse fields. This is great news because through the use of online platforms, your career goals and employment opportunities do not have to be limited.

What a Work-From-Home Job Is Not

Don’t believe the lies on social media. A work-from-home job isn’t a break from work or an excuse to slack off. It’s not about taking it easy or avoiding responsibilities. A remote career is just a different way of working that needs discipline and good time management. It doesn’t mean you’re on vacation; it means you have to find a balance between being in charge of your own work and still getting things done well and on time.

While a remote role allows you to work from the comfort of your own home, work-from-home positions are not a great way way to avoid the expense of childcare. The truth is many people who have home-based jobs still have to utilize daycare or arrange other childcare services for their children. While it would be wonderful to be paid for the valuable time you spend teaching and caring for your own child, I have yet to find someone who is writing checks for this. (If you find one, please email me immediately!)

When you work from home, your employer will have firm expectations of you. These expectations include things like a quiet work environment, quotas and deadlines being met, and oftentimes it includes working on a set schedule within a specific time zone (that may be different than the time zone you live in!). Some jobs where you work from a home office require all of these and more!
