“If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed.” I love this statement made by Admiral William H. McRaven in his commencement speech at the University of Texas at Austin in 2014.
Never have I understood this truth more clearly than as a parent! My little guys are currently 4 and 5 years old. Every morning they are expected to make their bed. Now, this is quite the challenge when you consider they are like a T-Rex with tiny arms that can’t reach across the bed. The difficulty is amplified since their beds are each against a wall, making it nearly impossible for success when working with traditional sheets and comforter.
Daily they would get started but soon into the process feel defeated. Then I would hear “Mom! I need help making my bed!” They wanted to feel the accomplishment of completing the task each morning, so I knew there had to be a better way.
Beddy’s to the Rescue
Thankfully there is! We came across Beddy’s when we were on a vacation. The boys were sleeping in bunkbeds – which are usually impossible to make – but these bunk beds had innovative Beddy’s bedding making them so easy to tidy each day. Beddy’s are one-piece high quality bedding sets that zip-up so you don’t have to fumble around bedposts or walls. Our kids were able to make up their beds by themselves while on vacation!
Beddy’s at Home
The boys looked through all of the Beddy’s color and pattern options and they both selected the Nautical Navy. When their Beddy’s arrived they were so excited! They helped me put their new bedding on their beds and immediately had to try them out. The boys melted into the soft minky fabric blanket lining the top of their Beddy.
Then they shot out of bed and wanted to try to make it up themselves. Who am I to dissuade children who want to tidy up? Of course you can make your bed! Thankfully I knew this would be a successful venture as Beddy’s are equipped with a smooth zipper that runs along the side making them super easy to use.
The boys made their beds in just 10 seconds…by themselves!
Never have I seen someone so excited to make his own bed. Confidence and pride oozed from my 4 year old. “I can make my bed without any help!” he exclaimed. But it hasn’t stopped there.
The ability to accomplish the first task of the day, on their own, allowed my boys to feel confident in doing other things independently. One task has multiplied into many. They feel a sense of pride in seeing a job well done and they are seeking ways they can help without being asked. The ability to make their bed was such a small thing to empower them with, but it has made an enormous impact.
So while I agree fully with Admiral McRaven, my preschool commencement speech would say, “If you want to change the world, start by making your Beddy’s!”
